A Soon To Be Dad...

So this is my maiden  post.  In about 6 weeks (give or take 2 weeks), I will be a father of a baby boy.  Both my wife Lena and I are very excited.  Personally, I cannot wait for our baby to arrive.  It's all we think about and all we talk about.  I am sure our friends are already tired of us but that's fine.

I personally don't tend to worry much but one concern I do have is how I (we) will be able to maintain an active lifestyle.  I love cycling, running and hiking but with the little one, I worry I won't have the energy for these types of activities and my hope is that by maintaining a blog will encourage us to maintain an active lifestyle.

I plan to blog about my runs/rides, my athletic events, and some product research/reviews (a blog dedicated to all things baby will be coming).  I am probably not going to the the fastest runner or the best hill climber out there, but I believe that I will represent the average active mid thirties male.  And for that my goal is to represent the average guy who is also holding down a full time job, raising a kid, and taking care of his husband duties, which would be primarily cooking (my wife hasn't cooked since 2010).

  1. Congrats on the (I assume still) impending arrival! Based on my experience with my tiny human:

    - It's pretty easy to take babies on runs with a good stroller. I have a BOB Revolution like everyone else on the planet. You're supposed to wait 5-6 months before you run with babies though, so their floppy little necks can strengthen up. Running up hills with the baby and stroller is ridiculously hard - those extra 30 lbs are huge.
    - It's pretty easy to take babies on hikes. A baby bjorn is ok for a while, but then you need a real frame-style backpack. I picked up a Deuter Kid Comfort II on sale, and it's super comfortable. Way better to hike with than the Bjorn.
    - You aren't supposed to bike with babies for a year. I think that the potential impacts are a lot stronger than running. In the meantime I'm just relying on Barb to watch the little dude while I go on rides (thanks honey!).

Also, all activities (excluding short runs) require way more baby gear. Food, diapers, wipes, changes of clothes, baby layers, etc, etc, etc. Definitely makes getting out of the house to go on a hike require 300% more preparation. It's definitely doable though, and pretty fun to take the little people out on adventures! Good luck!

  2. Thanks Dan! Hope you and Barbara are enjoying San Diego. I have actually been researching running strollers but I have a good amount of time for that. Glad to hear you are getting out to hikes and rides. How do you like your BOB? Do you have any tips on what I should look for in a running stroller? Can't wait to take my boy on runs around the neighborhood and some hikes. Cycling will have to wait until he is much older!

  3. I like the BOB, it works great. Having a front wheel that locks in place is great to keep the stroller straight when running, but it's nice that you can release it so that it pivots when just wandering around town. Some of the fancier ones have a hand brake as well (mine does not), which is supposed to make running down hill easier, but running hills is basically a no-go anyway, so I don't think it's a huge deal.

The big move to SD doesn't happen until 8/1 (most likely), but we are definitely starting to get ready!

  4. Thanks Dan! I checked a few out today. They look pretty solid. Baby Harrison is 4 weeks old now so I still have 5 more months before he can start going on runs with me.
